From township hall crossroads to Weston Road subdivisions
Vellore was once a small hamlet, and it was where Vaughan Township built its first township hall. The name survived the subdivisions. Housing development around the old crossroads, near Weston Road and Rutherford Road, began in the 1990s and carried on into the 2000s, spreading north toward Major Mackenzie Drive and beyond.
The townhouses here are a product of that later wave. They tend to be two- or three-storey freehold rows built by the same developers that put up the detached homes and semis around them. You will also see some condo townhouse complexes, but freehold is the default.
Because Vellore was built later than Woodbridge to the south, its streets are wider, garages are more often integrated into the front of the townhouse, and the lots are a little deeper than in older Vaughan complexes.
Living between Vaughan Mills and the hospital
Few townhouse areas in Vaughan have this much within a short drive. Vaughan Mills, one of the region's largest malls, opened in 2004 at Highway 400 and Rutherford. Canada's Wonderland sits just east of the 400. Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital opened in 2021 on Major Mackenzie Drive, north of Wonderland, ending Vaughan's long stretch as the largest Canadian city without a hospital.
For buyers, that cluster cuts both ways. Daily errands are easy and healthcare is close. But Weston Road, Rutherford Road and Major Mackenzie Drive get heavy traffic, especially on weekends and summer evenings near the mall and the park. A townhouse on an inner crescent will feel very different from one facing an arterial road, even if the floor plan is identical.
Who ends up in a Vellore townhouse
Vellore's freehold rows suit a few kinds of buyer especially well. Growing families who want a yard and a garage but can't stretch to a detached home are the biggest group. The schools, parks and stormwater-pond trails that came with the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions were planned with them in mind.
Buyers who work along the Highway 400 and 427 corridors, or in the industrial and logistics areas of Concord and west Vaughan, also like Vellore because the drive is short and doesn't involve the 401. Downsizers from larger Woodbridge homes sometimes choose a Vellore townhouse to stay close to family without giving up a private entrance and a bit of outdoor space.
If you need a train every morning, Vellore is less ideal, and Maple or Patterson may serve you better.
Highway 400, the 427 extension and the bus to the VMC
Vellore is a driving neighbourhood. Highway 400 runs along its east side, and since September 2021 the Highway 427 extension reaches Major Mackenzie Drive, giving the west side of Vellore a second freeway route south to the 407, 401 and Pearson.
Transit riders usually take York Region Transit south to the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and the Line 1 subway, or drive to Rutherford or Maple GO on the Barrie line. There's no rail station inside Vellore itself, so if you rely on the train, factor in station parking or a bus connection.
Questions worth asking on a Vellore row
- Is it on a POTL? Some newer Vellore rows share a private laneway or visitor parking and carry a small monthly common-element fee. It should be disclosed on the listing.
- Who owns the shared roof line? On freehold rows, each owner usually handles their own section. Ask whether neighbours have replaced theirs recently.
- Is the basement finished, and was it permitted? Basement apartments are common in Vaughan. If one is advertised, check whether it was legalized as a second unit.
- What's the rear yard like? Some rows back onto school fields or stormwater ponds, others back onto another row.
These details often account for more of the difference between two similar Vellore listings than the finishes inside.
What buyers ask about Vellore Village
Is Vellore Village part of Woodbridge?
It's often marketed as part of Woodbridge, but Vellore Village grew around its own former hamlet near Weston Road and Rutherford. Both are within the City of Vaughan.
How close are Vellore Village townhouses to Highway 427?
The 427 extension ends at Major Mackenzie Drive, on the west side of the area. From most Vellore streets it's a short drive, and Highway 400 is just as close on the east side.
When were the townhouses in Vellore Village built?
Development around the old hamlet began in the 1990s and continued through the 2000s, so most Vellore townhouses date from that period. Newer rows were added later on the northern edge.
Is there a GO station in Vellore Village?
No. Residents usually use Rutherford or Maple GO on the Barrie line, east of Highway 400, or take a bus to the subway at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
