Rupertsville, an airfield and a landfill
Maple's history explains its street map better than most places. The village at Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive was settled around 1852, and for a time it was called Rupertsville. A railway line arrived in the early 1850s, and the station that grew from it is today's Maple GO, now a federally designated heritage building.
Suburban streets first appeared around the old village in the 1960s, then spread quickly during the 1980s and 1990s until, around the turn of the millennium, they met the 400 on the west and Teston Road on the north. Canada's Wonderland opened in 1981 on farmland at Maple's west edge. Maple Airport closed in 1987, and some nearby streets are named after aircraft. The Keele Valley Landfill ran from 1983 to 2002, and part of the site is now a golf course.
That's why Maple's townhouses span several eras, from older condo complexes near the village core to freehold rows built around 2000 near the 400.
Keele Street and the old village core
The original Maple village sits around Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, and that's where the area's oldest buildings and some of its older condo townhouse complexes are. Keele Street was once lined with the maple trees that gave the place its name.
Townhouses near the core are within walking distance of Maple GO, local shops and the community's older parks. The trade-off is age. Complexes here are more likely to be facing roof, window and paving work, so the condo's finances matter more than the finishes in the unit. Farther from the core, toward Highway 400 and north of Major Mackenzie, the stock gets younger and more of it is freehold.
Two GO stations on one line
Maple has two Barrie line stations: Maple GO, near the old village, and Rutherford GO, at the south end of the community. That's unusual for Vaughan, and it's the main reason many commuters pick Maple over areas west of the 400.
Rutherford was rebuilt with a road underpass so trains no longer cross Rutherford Road at grade. It also got more parking and an improved bus loop. Metrolinx's long-term plan for the Barrie line is more frequent, two-way service through the day, though no firm timeline has been given for the full upgrade.
If you're comparing two Maple townhouses, measure the walk or drive to each station. A short walk to Maple GO is worth more than an extra bedroom to some commuters.
Three kinds of Maple townhouse
| Type | Where you tend to find it | Things to check |
|---|---|---|
| Older condo townhouse | Near the village core and Keele Street | Reserve fund, roof and window replacement history |
| Freehold row, 1990s to 2000s | Subdivisions toward Highway 400 and north of Major Mackenzie | Original roof and mechanicals, basement condition |
| Newer condo or stacked town | Infill along major roads | Parking, monthly fee, builder warranty |
Each has a different cost structure. With a condo town, most exterior risk is shared. With a freehold row, it's yours alone, but there's no monthly fee.
What's arrived recently, and what's next
The biggest recent addition is Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, which opened its doors in 2021 across Major Mackenzie from Canada's Wonderland; York University intends to put a medical school on the same campus. Vaughan City Hall is also on Major Mackenzie Drive in Maple. North of Teston Road, the city's Block 27 and Block 41 new community areas are planned for the next wave of subdivisions, which will add more traffic but also more shops and services on Maple's northern edge.
Maple's townhouse buyers are well placed for all of it. Just keep an eye on Major Mackenzie, Keele and Jane traffic as these areas fill in.
What buyers ask about Maple
Which GO stations serve Maple townhouses?
Maple GO and Rutherford GO, both on the Barrie line. Maple GO is near the old village at Keele and Major Mackenzie, and Rutherford GO is at the south end of the community.
Is the old Keele Valley Landfill a concern for nearby townhouses?
The landfill closed in 2002, and part of the site is now a golf course. If you're buying close to it, ask your lawyer to check for any registered restrictions and look at what the City of Vaughan has published about the site.
How old are Maple's townhouses?
They range widely. Maple's subdivisions were built from the 1960s through about 2000, with infill since, so you'll find older condo complexes near the village and freehold rows from the 1990s and 2000s closer to Highway 400.
Is Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital in Maple?
Yes. The hospital, which opened in 2021, stands on Maple's west side along Major Mackenzie, just above Canada's Wonderland.
