Two subway stations and a GO line at the west end of Line 2
Line 2 Bloor-Danforth reached Islington in 1968 and was extended one stop west to Kipling in 1980. Kipling also has a GO station, giving commuters a regional rail option alongside the subway. The neighbourhood runs from Bloor north to Rathburn Road, between Islington Avenue and Mimico Creek.
That transit is the main reason buyers look here. A townhouse within walking distance of Kipling or Islington offers a subway commute downtown and GO access west, which few townhouse areas in Etobicoke can match. Highway 427 is close by for drivers.
Six Points, rebuilt at street level
The intersection of Dundas, Bloor and Kipling, known as Six Points, was turned into a freeway-style interchange in 1961. Between 2017 and 2020 the City reconfigured it back into at-grade intersections, rerouting Dundas along Dunbloor Road and restoring pedestrian access. Redevelopment of the Six Points and former Westwood Theatre lands began in 2017 as a mixed-use project.
For townhouse owners, the rebuild has made the area more walkable and is bringing new buildings and services. It also means construction nearby for some time. Check active development sites around any unit you're considering.
The area's role as a second downtown has a long backstory. When Etobicoke's council moved in 1958 to a new complex beside Highway 427, it limited early plans to build Islington up as a western downtown. The subway's arrival a decade later, and now the Six Points redevelopment, have pushed the area back toward that role. For townhouse buyers, it means more services within walking distance over time, alongside steady new supply in the towers.
Townhouses among the towers
The area has seen residential growth since the late 1960s and a high-rise condo boom after the subway arrived. Townhouses here are mostly condo tenure: stacked and back-to-back units near the stations, and older townhouse complexes on side streets. Many share parking garages and amenities with neighbouring towers or have their own small corporation.
When comparing, look at what the fee covers. A townhouse that shares a corporation with a tower may help pay for elevators and amenities it doesn't use, while a standalone townhouse corporation pays only for its own needs but has fewer owners to split major repairs.
For first-time buyers moving up from a condo apartment, a stacked unit near Kipling or Islington can be a practical step: more space and a private entrance while keeping the subway walk. Families may prefer older complexes on side streets with basements and small yards.
Montgomery's Inn and the old village of Islington
Settlement began here in the 1830s, and Montgomery's Inn, built in 1832 to serve travellers on Dundas Street, is now Etobicoke's community museum. The community took the name Islington in 1860 when its post office opened. The Historic Village of Islington business area along Dundas has commissioned murals that give the street a distinct identity from the towers to the south.
What to check near a transit hub
- Noise and activity near the subway and GO tracks.
- Parking: many stacked units have one spot in a shared garage; confirm ownership.
- Rental share: transit attracts investors, so check how many units are tenanted and any leasing rules.
- Construction nearby, given ongoing redevelopment around Six Points.
