Four Line 6 stops along Finch
Line 6 Finch West opened on December 7, 2025, and four of its stops fall in this neighbourhood: Norfinch Oakdale, Jane and Finch, Driftwood and Tobermory. The line ends to the east at Finch West station on Line 1, about a kilometre from Keele, and runs west to Humber College.
Before the LRT, getting to the subway meant a bus. Now there's a dedicated line, though it runs in the street and stops at intersections. Highway 400 forms the western edge of the neighbourhood, so drivers have quick access north and south.
How a 1960s planned suburb shaped the townhouses
The area went from about 1,300 people in 1961 to 33,000 in 1971. The provincial housing corporation and North York's planning department set out to build a more urban-looking suburb, with high-rise apartments, detached and semi-detached houses, and townhouse complexes on large parcels. A larger-than-usual share of that housing was publicly built at the time.
Many of the townhouse complexes buyers see today are condominium corporations from that period or slightly later. They're often family-sized, with three bedrooms and a basement, on courtyards with shared parking. Age is the main factor to weigh: the building envelope, plumbing and garages in these complexes are now several decades old.
Those larger layouts are a large part of why buyers come here. A family that would be squeezed into a two-bedroom stacked unit closer in can often find three bedrooms, a basement and a small yard in a Jane and Finch complex, with a park or ravine trail a short walk away. The trade-off is the age of the complex and how well it has been run, so compare corporations as carefully as units.
Finch Avenue after the LRT
New rapid transit usually brings planning interest along its route, and Finch West is no exception. Over time, sites along the corridor may see redevelopment proposals, which can mean new housing and shops, as well as construction near existing complexes. If you're buying close to Finch, look up any active development applications nearby and consider how a project next door would affect your unit's light, noise and parking. Complexes further from Finch are less exposed to corridor change but also further from the stops.
Black Creek, Pioneer Village and York University
Black Creek, a tributary of the Humber, runs along the eastern edge as part of the ravine system. Parks include Driftwood, Edgeley, Fennimore, Oakdale and Topcliff. Black Creek Pioneer Village, an open-air museum of nineteenth-century Ontario life, sits in the northeast corner. York University is just east, with its own Line 1 station.
Oakdale Golf and Country Club, a private club that Black Creek runs through, hosted the Canadian Open in 2023. Beyond the golf course, the creek corridor and the neighbourhood parks are the main green spaces for townhouse residents, many of whom have only a small yard. Complexes close to the parks often have play areas and paths nearby, which matters to families choosing between units in different corporations.
Due diligence for older Jane and Finch complexes
- Read the status certificate for special assessments, past or pending.
- Ask how the corporation has handled window, roof and garage repairs over the last decade.
- Check whether parking is owned, exclusive-use or assigned.
- Look at nearby construction: Finch has seen years of LRT work, and redevelopment may follow along the corridor.
