A wool town that kept its downtown
Almonte was settled in 1816 and went through several names, including Shepherd's Falls and Waterford, before becoming one of the principal wool manufacturing towns in the Ottawa Valley. The falls that powered those mills still run through the middle of town, and the town's first hydro station opened in 1890. That history is why Almonte feels different from a newer commuter subdivision: the downtown, the river and the old mill buildings are the centre of daily life.
Townhouses grew around that core rather than in it. Most of what comes up for sale is on newer residential streets toward the edges of town, with the established heart of Almonte still dominated by older detached homes.
Executive and Avenue rows at Weavers Way
Minto's Weavers Way, on Old Almonte Road between that road and Appleton Side Road, is the main source of new townhomes. Minto expects it to pass 500 homes when complete, and it offers two townhouse lines:
- Executive plans, the larger of the two, which can be configured with as many as six bedrooms, a finished lower level and a guest suite.
- Avenue plans, Minto's other row product on the site.
Bungalows and two-storey singles share the community. If you're comparing a resale in an older Almonte row with a new Minto unit, line up the actual square footage, basement finish and garage size rather than bedroom count alone, since a six-bedroom plan only helps if you need it.
Daily life from an Almonte townhouse
Almonte General Hospital is in town, along with schools, supermarkets, independent restaurants and cafés, art galleries and museums. Metcalfe Geoheritage Park and nearby conservation areas give you trails without driving far. For a townhouse owner, this is the main appeal: you can handle most errands locally and keep the drive to Kanata or Carleton Place for work and bigger shopping trips.
The town also has three elementary schools and Almonte and District High School, which matters to families buying a three-bedroom town and planning to stay through the school years.
Who ends up in an Almonte row
Almonte's townhouse buyers are a mix that reflects the town. Young families come for the schools and the walkable downtown, often after renting in Ottawa and deciding they would rather trade some commute time for a three-bedroom with a yard. Downsizers from rural Lanark County move in to be close to the hospital and downtown without the upkeep of a farmhouse or a big lot. And a smaller group of Ottawa buyers who work partly from home choose Almonte specifically because they only need to drive in a few days a week.
Investors are less common here than in Carleton Place or Arnprior, partly because the townhouse pool is smaller and partly because the new supply at Weavers Way gives renters and buyers alike more options. If you're buying to rent, check what comparable units nearby are leasing for and how long they sit empty before relying on a projection.
Before you buy in Almonte
- Phase timing. Ask what's approved next to the unit. With Weavers Way and other growth under way, open views can change.
- Lot grading and warranty. On newer streets, check whether the final grading certificate has been issued and whether any Tarion claims are still open.
- Common element fees. Some rows are on private lanes with a monthly fee. Find out what it covers and whether a reserve exists.
- River proximity. Units near the Mississippi River should be checked against flood mapping.
What buyers ask about Almonte
Can I walk to downtown Almonte from the newer townhouse streets?
It depends on the street. Some newer rows are a walkable distance from downtown, while Weavers Way on Old Almonte Road is further out, so check the route on foot before assuming.
Is Almonte General Hospital close to the townhouse areas?
Yes, the hospital is in town, so it's a short drive from any of Almonte's residential streets.
Who builds the new townhomes in Almonte?
Minto Communities is building Weavers Way, the largest new community, with Executive and Avenue townhouse lines alongside bungalows and singles.
