Ridgeway townhouse guide

A main street village with a bungalow boom

Ridgeway's centre is a small, walkable main street with shops, cafés and a seasonal farmers' market. The Battle of Ridgeway, fought during the Fenian Raids in 1866, is commemorated nearby. Around the village, newer communities of bungalow townhouses and semis have been added for buyers who want one-floor living close to beaches and the Friendship Trail.

Royal Ridge, for example, was marketed as a bungalow community of townhomes and semis with one- and two-bedroom layouts, covered rear patios and main-floor laundry, close to the Ridgeway farmers' market, shops and beaches.

The village has deep roots. Ridgeway is one of Fort Erie's older villages, and its main street still has many of its older storefronts and homes. The new bungalow communities on the edges have a very different look, with uniform rooflines, attached garages and small front gardens.

Close to Crystal Beach and the Friendship Trail

Ridgeway sits just inland from Crystal Beach and other Lake Erie beach communities. The Friendship Trail passes through the area, making it easy to walk or cycle to the beaches, to Fort Erie and toward Port Colborne.

In summer, beach traffic picks up, and parking near the lake can be tight. Ridgeway's main street gets busier too. Winters are quiet.

What to check in a Ridgeway bungalow town

  • Confirm whether the unit is freehold, common element condominium or standard condominium.
  • Ask what the monthly fee covers: lawn care, snow removal, exterior maintenance.
  • Check for age-oriented rules or rental restrictions.
  • Confirm remaining Tarion warranty and any deficiency claims on newer units.
  • Look at storage: bungalow towns without basements or with small garages can be tight.

Bungalow towns built on slabs or with crawl spaces have less storage than ones with full basements, so count closets before you count bedrooms.

Who buys in Ridgeway

Ridgeway's townhouse buyers are mostly downsizers and retirees, many coming from Hamilton, the GTA and other parts of Niagara. Some are second-home buyers who spend summers here. A smaller number are families and local workers who buy 2-storey towns.

Because so many buyers are from out of town, it's worth spending a weekend in Ridgeway in both summer and winter before deciding.

Some buyers are local seniors selling detached houses in Fort Erie, Port Colborne or Welland, staying in the area but swapping stairs and lawns for a bungalow town with a monthly fee that covers the outdoor work.

Ridgeway against Crystal Beach and the Lakeshore

Ridgeway gives you a village main street and a short trip to the beaches. Crystal Beach puts you right at the water but with fewer townhouses and more seasonal traffic. The Lakeshore area offers lake views and quicker access to the Peace Bridge.

For downsizers who want walkable shops and a quieter setting, Ridgeway is often the first choice.

Ridgeway buyers who need more space or a second storey for visiting family should look at the 2-storey towns that come up in and around the village, which tend to sell to a different, younger crowd.

Either way, plan your test drives in July and in January. The village feels like two different places in those months.

What buyers ask about Ridgeway

Are Ridgeway townhouses mostly bungalows?

Many are bungalow towns or semis aimed at downsizers, though 2-storey towns also appear.

Is Ridgeway walkable?

Units close to the village centre can walk to shops and the farmers' market. Newer communities on the edges are more car-dependent.

How far is Ridgeway from the beach?

Crystal Beach and other Lake Erie beaches are a short drive or bike ride away, and the Friendship Trail connects them.
